Taking a photo the scan can actually read
Most rejected photos fail for one of a few reasons, and all of them are quick to fix.
- Light on your face, not behind it. Face a window or a lamp. Light from behind puts your features in shadow, and the scan cannot work with that.
- Phone at eye level. Held high, it makes the jaw look narrower. Held low, it does the opposite. Either way the score measures the angle, not you.
- Whole face in the frame, looking at the lens. Neutral face, no hard smile, glasses off, hair back off the forehead and jaw.
- No makeup if you can. Foundation and concealer cover the texture, tone and marks that the skin score reads. A scan in heavy makeup still runs, but the skin score comes with a warning instead of a clean number, and a later scan without makeup would look like a drop that never happened.
- A side photo means a full 90 degrees. A half turn is the most common reason a side photo gets sent back.
- Clean lens, steady hand. A dirty front camera looks like poor skin clarity to the scan.
Why scores move between scans
A score is an estimate from a photo, so it comes with a confidence band that tells you how much room for error the photo left. A change inside that band is noise, not progress. Light, camera angle, sleep, water, makeup and time of day all move a score even when nothing about your skin has changed.
To get rescans you can compare, take them in the same room, in the same kind of light, at roughly the same time of day, and with the same amount of makeup. Then read the trend across several weeks rather than the difference between any two scans. Skin and brows move fastest. Hair takes months, and jaw and balance are mostly set by bone, which is why the peak holds them where they are.
Manage or cancel your subscription
Dermara Pro is $9.99 per week ($4.99 for the first week, where the store offers it) or $59.99 per year. Apple bills it, so you manage it in your device settings rather than inside the app.
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Choose Dermara.
- Tap Cancel Subscription, or change your plan. Apple's own steps are at support.apple.com.
Restore purchases
New phone, or did you reinstall the app? Open Dermara, go to Settings, and tap Restore Purchases to link an active subscription from your App Store account again. Dermara is anonymous, so restore is tied to your App Store account rather than to a Dermara login.
Restoring a subscription does not restore your scores or your plan. Those are tied to the anonymous account on the phone that created them, so a new install starts a new history.
Common questions
My photo was rejected. How do I take one that works?
Dermara checks the photo before it scores anything, because a bad photo gives a bad score. Face a window or another even light rather than standing with your back to it. Hold the phone at eye level, not above or below you. Keep your whole face in the frame, look straight at the lens, and take your glasses off. Do not smile hard, because it changes the shape of everything the scan looks at. Tie your hair back off your forehead and jaw, and go without makeup if you can, because foundation covers exactly what the skin score reads. For the side photo, turn a full 90 degrees, not halfway.
My scores changed between scans. Did I actually change?
Maybe, and maybe not. Light, camera angle, time of day, makeup and how well you slept all move a score, even when nothing has happened to your skin. That is why every score comes with a confidence band. A change inside the band is noise, not progress. To make rescans easy to compare, take them in the same place, in the same kind of light, at roughly the same time of day, and with the same amount of makeup, which ideally means none. Real change in most areas takes weeks, so trust the trend across several scans rather than the difference between two.
How do I delete my data?
Open Dermara, go to Settings, and use Delete my data. That erases your scores, findings, plans, task history, streaks and coach chat from our servers, at once and without asking us. Your photos were never stored on our servers in the first place, so there is nothing there to delete. Because Dermara is anonymous, the control in the app is the only way to do this. We hold no email or account to find you by, so we usually cannot delete your data from an email alone. Deleting your data does not cancel your subscription.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are billed by Apple, so you cancel in your device settings rather than inside Dermara. Open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose Dermara, then Cancel Subscription. Cancel before your renewal date to avoid the next charge. Deleting the app does not cancel anything.
How do I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com or through your device settings. If a charge looks wrong, email us and we will help where we can.
I paid but the app still shows me locked.
Open the app, go to Settings, and tap Restore Purchases. Give it a moment, because subscription status can take a short time to update. If it still does not unlock, email us with the date of purchase and we will fix it.
Can I scan my partner, or a friend?
No. Dermara scans your own face only. There is no way to score another person, and sending somebody else’s photo breaks the Terms of Use.
Still stuck?
Email rfurdui@gmail.com with what happened and, if it helps, the date of any purchase. Please do not attach other people's photos or personal details.
If something in the app upset you rather than broke, tell us that too. Dermara is meant to be useful, not to make you feel worse, and we would rather hear about it. Nothing in the app is medical advice. Please speak to a qualified professional about a health, skin or mental health concern.
